Am I Absolutely Positive My Denomination Does Not Participate In New Age Spiritual Formation?

To our shock, extreme sorrow and dismay, we have found that the heretical, seductive and dangerous spirituality taught in Spiritual Formation has infiltrated every denomination.

The list and links below, document  major denominations are using their theological universities and seminaries in promoting New Age/Contemplative Spiritual Formation programs within their churches. These links are intended only to alert believers as to the widespread acceptance of these things within our churches.

The list is by no means comprehensive. To date, we have not found a single denomination that is completely free from these heretical influences.

Only the Spirit of the Lord can direct us as to which local fellowship we should belong to or not belong to, and we are certainly not advocating a mass exodus from the local churches or even from the denominations listed here. We are advocating watchfulness in prayer and courage to stand and contend for the faith.

United Methodist/Presbyterian

I personally received an email from within the Dean’s office at the United Methodist University of Dubuque Theological Seminary requesting information on labyrinth walking. They had my ministry, Hungry Hearts Ministries, confused with a Presbyterian “Hungry Heart” Spiritual Formation program, and wanted my permission to use one of the Hungry Heart Newsletter articles in training their seminary students to facilitate labyrinth walking as part of their spiritual formation program.

Below is a copy of that correspondence:

“The University of Dubuque Theological Seminary located in Dubuque, Iowa would like copyright permission to reproduce "Labyrinth" from the Summer 2000, Vol. 8, No. 2 edition of Hungry Hearts.

The purpose is for use in our Spiritual Formation Group class. We are seeking permission to use as part of our curriculum for several years. Is there a one time copyright fee that would cover us for several years? We have approx. 30-40 students in the class per year.

Thank you for your assistance.”

I responded that I had no idea as to what they were referring to and received a rather brusque reply when they realized their mistake.

Baylor University, Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas, promotes contemplative spirituality through their Spiritual Formation training.

According to …Betty Talbert, director of spiritual formation at Baylor University’s Truett Theological Seminary, Baptists typically have focused almost exclusively on intercessory prayer, but they can grow spiritually by focusing on different types of prayer. “Try new prayers. Let some folks do contemplative prayers..."

Baylor is the oldest institution of higher learning in continuous operation in the state [of Texas] and the largest Baptist university in the world.
